Seth's journal from his visit to Haiti and Dominican Republic Dec. 13 - 19!

Hoops for Haiti

Sporting Chance Foundation was founded in 2007 by Seth Stammler of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. Seth was inspired to start Sporting Chance Foundation after a philanthropic trip to Haiti in November of 2006, where he was able to witness and experience the unfortunate environment that is Haiti today. On the trip, Seth and a couple of his Haitian born teammates, Jozy Altidore and Jerrod Laventure, took part in a number of soccer clinics with under-privileged youths and children from a local orphanage. In addition, they conducted a number of clothing distributions, which included passing out gently used clothes collected in the U.S.

After witnessing the struggle for some of the most basic necessities, Seth made the decision to pursue water wells as one of the primary initiatives of Sporting Chance Foundation. Both the fully capable, as well as the crippled have to walk up to 15 miles to find clean, useable water for their families. By spreading out these sources of water, both the demand as well as the accessibility of water will dramatically improve. Using trusted sources in Haiti, Sporting Chance will research and build wells in the most accessible locations throughout Haiti. Once built, with the generous donations received by Sporting Chance, these wells will be maintained and cared for by the individuals who use them.

With each well providing water to nearly 10,000 people, and water-borne illnesses being the leading cause of death in the world today, Sporting Chance is certain it can make a noticeable impact almost immediately.

Along with witnessing the struggle for everyday necessities like water, Seth was able to work with and interact with the Haitian youth. Seth experienced first hand, the need for better and more widespread educational resources. Education is a powerful tool in Haiti, enabling disadvantaged youths to turn their lives around and one day become community leaders. As gangs in Haiti provide more resistance, as well as get a stronger hold on the community, children need a better option, and Sporting Chance believes education to be that option. Conversely to the U.S. where children often dread school on a daily basis, the Haitian youth actually look forward to school because they have an appreciation for the opportunity that education will provide them in the future.
As Sporting Chance Foundation knows this can not be done alone, we have the support of many athletes from around the World that realize the potential Haiti has as a nation, and are confident in our making a difference together. As we continually work to raise capital and carry out our initiatives, we will grow our partnerships. Check out the Supporting Athletes page to see the various athletes who have contributed to Sporting Chance Foundation and their remarks about Sporting Chance Foundation.
